Report
by Luke Boumphrey
Only a few
games played this Monday with no huge changes in the pecking
order., The observant amongst you will notice that Chris has 5
more pts without playing a game and Sanjoy's score has gone up
even though he lost to John Carleton. This is because I omitted
giving them the full bonus for there wins a few weeks ago. It’s
a good job there is no money riding on this!
The game I had
against John Redmond was interesting. An off beat line from John
resulted in a level position but John opened the centre too
quickly and was soon on the ropes. This continued for most of
the game with Johns defence holding out until finally I decided
to transpose to an ending where I had a minimal pull. This pull
was soon neutralized and I offered the draw.
Sanjoy said
that he was disappointed with his game where he gradually got
squeezed off the board but it was no shame to lose to our top
player.
Vojtek managed
to win both his games before William got warmed up and got one
back so he moves into provisional 2nd place as Nigel
has not played enough games to be eligible.
That’s all for
this week folks see you at the Wallasey match!

We have a new
leader. Nigel has recently joined the club and made short work
of Marcus in the first game but Marcus got his revenge in the
second.
I managed to win
with the grand prix attack against Sanjoy who has been given too
many blacks in this tournament
Brian and John had
an interesting encounter in the English which John managed to
win.
Apologies to late
arrivals for our change in room tonight meant a lot didn’t get
into the chess club tonight. At least we met down the pub later
for some interesting political debate. Its been one of those
nights!

Report
by Luke Boumphrey
Well I am back and
an interesting night tonight with some surprise results and a
lot of people down many of whom didn’t play in the tourney.
A slow start with
the keys not arriving meant no problem solving tonight to
everyone’s relief I suspect. So there was a drawing of lots when
someone did turn up with keys and the games started.
First to finish were
my two games with William who has improved a lot but still has
further to go. Second to finish was Marcus and John who I must
apologise to. I did get the result but until I get Johns surname
and grade neither player can get into the table. The only bit I
saw of the game was when John mistakenly a pawn down swapped off
into a lost ending and Marcus converted.
Chris’s tactic
tonight was genius; lull your opponent into a false sense of
security by getting your openings confused then beat the GM
slayer John R in the rematch when he has got into time trouble.
Chris deservedly goes to the top of the table.
Dave James didn’t
play tonight he was too busy entertaining one of the founder
members who popped in from the Southern Hemisphere!
Sean Malkeson yet
again got into a good position in his game but it seems was
traumatised by earlier mistakes and still in pain from a
gardening accident failed to realise that the blunder of a rook
was actually a GM style sacrifice which could have converted to
a win for him. However it wasn’t to be and Vojtech converted his
extra material.
Perhaps the shock of
tonight was Sanjoy beating Brian and thus proving to everyone
how good a player he can be and hopefully to himself as well. It
was a Slav defence and Sanjoy painstakingly converted the
advantage he gained.
It now looks like a
4 horse race with Dave James looking ominous as he may be
picking up a bonus for a high percentage but in this tourney
anything can happen and frequently does.

Some good games
tonight with a few more Problems to start off.
Sean played a good
opening against me and didn’t make any obvious mistakes but
grabbed a pawn which was perhaps too hot. The ensuing endgame
with his 3 pawns for my knight ( two of them passed) was
interesting but I felt confident I would win it particularly as
he was in time trouble.
I didn’t get to see
Chris’s and Vojtech’s game which was a shame as a draw was a
good result for Vojtek and moved him up the table.
Dave won a piece
early against Sanjoy and converted in spite of Sanjoys efforts,.
Brian and Johns was
an interesting encounter where Brian's attacking flair got the
better of Johns defensive positional style. In their detailed
analysis after the game from what I saw of it John was more than
holding his own in spite of what instinctively felt like a
better position for Brian.
Anyway a good night
down the pub and another week gone.
I wont be here next
week so the report will be delayed but Sean has kindly accepted
the job of opening up.
See you in 2 weeks.

A quiet night as far
as the tourney went tonight with only two official games played.
Sanjoy and Sean
played each other with Sean developing his pieces sensibly which
can always be a problem against the Najdorf! Sean blundered a
piece but still had a reasonable attack. Sanjoy spent too much
time on deciding whether to win a further exchange and in the
resulting time trouble left his queen en-prise. Guiltily Sean
accepted the win.
In my game against
Dave I played an opening which I had only vague familiarities
with. However I got a reasonable position and then went wrong.
Rather than allowing my self to be pushed back I sacced only to
find that Dave's’ king was totally safe on the third rank and
Dave finished nicely.

Tonight got off to a
slow start with the usual problem solving. Sean and Vojtech did
very well in this department .
My game against
Chris was rocky to say the least. Tired of my usual line against
him I tried something new and soon found my king in the middle
of the board. However with one or 2 inaccuracies I got
counterplay and helped by Chris overlooking a tactic it was
Chris’s king which found itself in trouble.
Vojtech and Sanjoy
played a closed game with Sanjoys’ position looking solid but
un-enterprising. Vojtek opened lines against Sanjoys king and
with Sanjoy bringing his Queen over to aid in the defence found
that it was his queen and not his king that ended up mated.
Sean who is still
improving unfortunately dropped a piece early to John Lambert
but still managed to mount an attack. John defended coolly
however and the extra material told.
The final game was
my return match against Brian. I was eager to get revenge and
chose a solid line that apparently avoided his preparation.
Undeterred Brian mounted an attack but finding no way through he
was making pawn weaknesses which I hoped would tell in an
endgame. Adding fuel to the fire Brian sacked a couple of pawns
but to no avail. The technical double rook ending which resulted
had me two pawns up and eventually Brian conceded.

Tonight the games
got off to a slow start with the introduction of some problem
solving which ranged from the easy to the unfathomable for most.
Richard Savory found a new solution to the harder problems.
After a drawing of lots the games got underway. My game against
Vojtech was the first to finish un-characteristically Vojtech
made a known opening mistake and though the ending was drawn out
he couldn’t recover. Sean continued his progress getting into a
good position against Brian before his inexperience told and
followed by a blunder Brian converted.
I didn’t see much of
the two Johns game but I assume there were no surprises and one
of the top board in the first division was recorded the win.
Chris who had been
playing one of the visitors to the hotel who must have been
quite handy because they managed to win half of the games then
went on to beat Vojtech. Then the majority of us went down to
the Everyman pub as usual with some of the regular late
arrivals.

Report
by Luke Boumphrey
Well, before the
scheduled start the summer tourney got underway with an
organised drawing of lots by John Carleton. Steve Connor was
drawn to play John C and after some time boiled down to a Rook
ending where John was pressing. However Steve managed to hold it
for a well deserved draw. I was drawn to play last years player
of the year in the 5th division Vojtech Fiser. Trying to take
the game into a Tal - Smyslov game which I thought I knew well I
got my move order wrong and was soon a pawn down however I
rather unfairly had counterplay and Vojtech went wrong in the
complications to end up 2 bishops for a rook down. I managed to
convert.
New boy Sean
Malkeson seemed to have a very sound position against Richard
Noonan's Centre Counter but blundered and the end was quick. In
the rematch Richards’ pressure in a Maroczy type position
coupled with the strains of karaoke outside converted to a
resignation by Sean before his clock fell. Chris Wentworth and
John Lambert had their battle in the grand old romantic style at
first with me being tempted at one stage to rudely ask where
Chris’s other rook was. But the attack thrived over material and
an early win for Chris. In the rematch there was a completely
different game with Chris unable to break the shackles of
Johns’ Positional play and honours even
The late starting
game was between me and Brian and he coolly refuted my unsound
opening and after more errors was material up with an attack. In
a desperate attempt to wrest the initiative I sacked my queen
which was Fritz's second candidate move, but the position had
already gone and Brian finished quickly.
