2nd Sept - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

Sean Malkeson ½-½ Stephen Philp

Although it was a busy night down the club tonight only one summer tourney game took place. Sean attacked well but at the critical moment missed a by no means obvious win and play transposed to an ending which was by the time I saw it, drawn.

Next week is the end of the summer tourney and there are 3 contenders for first place with Andre Stancak being favourite.

19th August - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

John Carleton 1-0 Chris Wentworth

Phil Hopkins 1-0 Sean Malkeson

Luke Boumphrey 0-1 Chris Wentworth

Its been a quiet few weeks whilst the British Championships have been on. Chris has been busy though and now lies in second place. He beat Neil Suttie after Neil had the better of the opening 2 weeks ago.

This week Chris unleashed a new opening on both me and John Carleton beating me quite convincingly but failing to get the better of John. In the other game played Phil won on time against the returning Sean Malkeson.

5th August - Results from Luke Boumphrey

Chris Wentworth 1-0 Neil Suttie

30th July - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

Steve Burge 0-2 Luke Boumphrey

Phil Hopkins 0-1 Brian Ewart

Mark Wadsworth 1-0 Neil Suttie

With most chess players in Liverpool concentrating on the British Championships at St. George's Hall, the summer tourney had its quietest night yet.

The first game to finish was my first against Steve Burge. Steve obtained a reasonable position with his new opening but went wrong in the tactics dropping material and the game. Phil and Brian's game was interesting Phil conceding some pawn weaknesses for an entrenched knight . Brian played round this and while Phil was worried about his pawns he forgot about his king and Brian converted quickly. Mark and Neil fought out a tough battle Neil's early pawn gambit for development permitted Mark to consolidate his position and in giving the pawn back, went on to win a close fought game.

22nd July - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

John Carleton 1-0 Brian Ewart

Steve Burge 0-2 John Redmond

Dave James 0-1 Luke Boumphrey

Steve Philp 0-1 Phil Hopkins

Some tough games played tonight with no less than 3 players claiming bonuses for their high percentage of wins. John faced an unusual line against Brian but managed to outplay him in the middlegame and notched up his 100% bonus. He has a chance of winning this tourney if he continues to win but must play some higher graded players as well or hope that when Andre returns from holiday he is not in such quite good form.

John Redmond picked up a pawn early as white to beat Steve Burge and then picked up his 90% bonus by outplaying him in a difficult middlegame. I was lucky in my game against Dave who held some advantage all the way through but mis-judged the ending which he went in for. By not acquiescing to some draws he eventually ended up with a worse position and I managed to convert picking up an 80% bonus. Steve Philp and Phil's game was truly chess for blood with no quarter given in either the game or the analysis. In the end Phil played on in what may have been a drawn position and with the clock on his side duly converted.

14th July - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

Luke Boumphrey 1-0 Vojtech Fiser

Mark Wadsworth 0-1 Andre Stancak

Phil Hopkins 2-0 Neil Suttie

Brian Ewart 0-1 Vojtech Fiser

Chris Wentworth ½-½ Steve Burge

6 games played tonight and most of them decisive.

Phil's first game against Neil finished very quickly with Neil blundering early on. The next game to finish was my game against Vojtek. He played originally in the opening and obtained a reasonable position. The game revolved around an unsound queen manoeuvre of mine which Vojtech missed the main threat of which spoilt his position completely and I soon won material and position and the game.

Andre earned his place at the top of the table with a model opening and consistent strategy. Prophylaxis on the queen side coupled with a strong attack on the king gave him the win and the 90% bonus. If Andre were to notch up even a draw against similarly graded opposition next week his will be the score to beat. It was good to see Vojtech down the club again and he played Brian who quickly established a position a piece up. However Vojtech had established a wedge in Brian's position and in attempting to break it Brian unfortunately dropped a whole rook.

Meanwhile Neil's unfortunate night continued with Phil taking full advantage of his opening mistake in the return game. No matter how much Neil battled he couldn’t recover and Phil notched up his second point of the night. Meanwhile Chris and Steve played a more sedate game with Steve's draw offer accepted by Chris with plenty of time left to discuss things down at the Everyman (Theatre).

5th July - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

Luke Boumphrey 1-0 Neil Suttie (game)

Phil Hopkins 0-1 Steve Philp

Mark Wadsworth 1-0 Brian Ewart

Martin Blasczyk 0-1 Andre Stancak

Steve Burge ½-½ Chris Wentworth

Phil Hopkins 1-0 Sanjoy Bannerjee

Another night another set of results and some interesting games.

My game against Neil was very interesting I think. I have given it to Steve to put up on the website. In summary Neil played principally and maybe correctly for much of the game but run into some fierce tactics when he decided to open the position. A few errors here and there from either side left black material down and a hopeless endgame.

Phil's game this week against Steve Philp left him with a misplaced queen more down to inexperience rather than a lack of desire or talent. This cost him the game as Steve was able to trap her majesty. Mark played a very sound positional game against Brian’s attempts to follow Grischuk’s opening idea. In a difficult position Brian miscalculated to leave Mark a whole rook up. There was no coming back.

Andre continued his strong form with a demolition of an opening idea of Martin's which left him a sound pawn up which he converted with good technique. If Andre were to win his next game he will get a bonus for his high percentage of wins and this will put him in a strong position.

Steve Burge and Chris Wentworth had a real dogfight. Chris found himself with control on the queenside which I rather unfairly(on Steve) expected him to convert. When I next looked at the game he had his major pieces on the eighth rank and a mating attack. However Chris defended doggedly and after a slip allowed a resourceful (or according to modest Chris) desperate exchange sac. Chris was able to force perpetual and rare for this tourney, shared the honours with his opponent

16th June - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

Luke Boumphrey 1–0 Mark Wadsworth

John Carleton 1-0 Phil Hopkins

Steve Philp 1–0 Martin Blasczyk (game)

A quiet night tonight which started with the usual problem solving. My game against Mark was the first to finish. Mark drifted into opening difficulties and didn’t find the best defence dropping a pawn. A further queen exchange left him with a hopeless endgame. Phil chose a French pawn structure against John Carleton and soon drifted into a lost  ending with a hopelessly bad bishop. Steve and Martin had a very interesting game which I have asked for it to be put on this website. Martin grabbed a hot pawn and soon regretted it, Steve's superior development telling.

2nd June - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

Neil Suttie 0-1 John Carleton

Phil Taylor 0-1 Luke Boumphrey

J, Redmond 1-0 Martin Blascyk

Mark Wadsworth 0-1 Chris Wentworth

Andre Stancak ½-½ Dave James

Neil Suttie ½-½ Frank Boyd

Another good night down the Adelphi with 5 games played in the summer tourney and plenty of bitz and lively discussion afterwards.

Carlo's game against newcomer Neil Suttie was interesting John allegedly went wrong in an open game but his class told and he quickly won.

In my return match against Phil in another open game my love of sacrifice again had an influence. It should have lost but instead of centralising his king against my attack Phil headed for the corner with big material loss coming.

Neil then took on Frank and their result is above (sorry didn’t see these games).

Nor did I see Chris and Marks game but Chris pulled out an interesting aggressive line with black and won material.

The heavyweight encounter of the night had to be Andre and Dave's game, In a highly theoretical line Andre seemed to establish advantage with white. Dave fought hard and with the queens coming off the current seemed to change. An ending resulted which was difficult to judge but Dave had the upper hand. As the material reduced Dave won the pawn race but only just. After nearly 3 hours play a position resulted with Dave having Q+N against pawn but amazingly it seemed to be a theoretical draw so peace was agreed.

27th May - Report & results from Luke Boumphrey

Sanjoy Bannerjee 0-1 John Carleton

Luke Boumphrey 1-0 Phil Taylor

Andre Stancak 1-0 Steve Philp

Frank Boyd 0-1 Martin Blasczyk

John Redmond ½-½ Luke Boumphrey

A quiet start to the summer tournament saw most games being decisive. Carlo finished first with a neat dark square destruction of Sanjoy’s English Opening.

I took on Phil in a main line Sicilian rather uncharacteristically deciding to sacrifice early. Phil declined and it was solely this that cost him material position and the game.

Meanwhile Andre and Steve had decided to play an opening neither were that familiar with, with the result that Andre with the white pieces obtained a clear positional plus of doubled isolated pawns on an open file which he duly converted.

John Redmond arrived later and we played a half hour game that was not without interest or inaccuracies. We disputed who was better following the opening and John got into time pressure which led to a clear advantage for me (clear to John that is) I succeeded in 'ballsing' it up and it was only Zeitnot which got me the draw.

The final hard fought game between previous Summer tourney winner Frank Boyd and newcomer Martin Blaszyk was very interesting. Frank got some advantage with the white pieces but maybe not enough to claim a theoretical win. Martin's pieces were well placed for the defence and Franks position was a little loose. Rather than steer to an ending with a slight edge Frank mis-combined and Martin brought the point home leading to him having a well earned early lead in the summer tourney.
