Bob Wade

The funeral of Bob Wade (1921-2008) was held at Eltham Crematorium on Tuesday 16 December at 10.15am. There was a very large turn out of people. John Saunders of BCM took some photos of those who went along. Wade died on Saturday 29 November 2008 in the early hours at the age of 87. British Rapidplay Championship 2008

GM David Howell won this event impressively with 10½/11, 2nd= GM Mark Hebden and FM Jonathan Hawkins with 8½, 4th IM Lawrence Trent 8. The event was held at the Halifax Leisure Centre on 29 & 30th November. Each player had thirty minutes to complete the game.  More information, photos and games at www.british-rapidplay.org.uk.

Dresden Olympiad 2008

Armenia won the men's gold medal scoring 19 points and winning nine matches. GMs Vladimir Akopian and Gabriel Sargissian finished with performance ratings over 2800. Israel finished second.

England finished 15th with 15 points, Scotland 53rd with 12 points, Wales 81st with 11. Further details available for individual players here.

 

Georgia defeated Serbia 3-1 in round 11 to take gold in the women's event. They finished tied with Ukraine but won on tiebreaks. Top board GM Maia Chiburdanidze performed over 2700 and she will also win an individual bronze.

 

The Olympiad took place from November 12th - 25th, in the Congress Hall in Dresden, Germany.  Atticus player Jonathan Blackburn Elo 2175 was there representing Wales scoring 2/7.

World Championship 2008

The Anand-Kramnik match started on Tues 14 Oct, is scheduled to be played over 12 games under classical time controls and finishes on 31 Oct. If a tiebreak is required it will be played on 02 Nov. The prize fund, to be split equally between the players, is 1½ million Euro (about $2.1 million).

 

The match is taking place at the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. Games start daily at 15.00 local time (14.00 GMT) and will be covered live on Playchess and ICC.

 

Anand won his World title in Sept 2007 at the tournament in Mexico City. Kramnik, who was undefeated in his three world championship matches, came second in that double round robin event.

 

The match takes place under the patronage of the German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrück and the main sponsor is Evonik Industries. Further details available at the official website.

Glorney and Faber Cups 2008

Liverpool John Moores University IM Marsh campus hosted this prestigious and famous tournament from July 22nd–25th 2008.

 

In 1948 a Dublin businessman created the Glorney Cup (for boys) and it was joined twenty years later by the Faber Cup (for girls). Results and photos here

Frodsham Weekend Congress 2008

This took place on 8th, 9th and 10th February at Frodsham Community Centre, Fluin Lane, Cheshire, WA6 7QN. Three sections - Major (U170), Intermediate (U130) and Minor (U90).  Part of the ECF Grand Prix.

The 6th Gibtelecom Chess Festival was held from 22nd - 31st January 2008 at the Caleta Hotel, Gibraltar, one of their best hotels. The Masters line-up looked very impressive and included 2007 world championship contender Alexander Grischuk, Viktor Bologan, Kiril Georgiev, Hikaru Nakamura, two members of the Chinese team that competed in Liverpool Zhang Pengxiang and Ni Hua plus many other excellent GM’s. The full list of entrants was regularly updated. This year John Saunders, BCM editor, was responsible for the official website on which all the information and results with game downloads can be found.
